Without repeating what's already been said, I think it's also worth mentioning the lesser-known sites that Istria has to offer. While the famous landmarks like Pula's Roman amphitheatre or the Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč are definitely not to be missed, I'd suggest venturing off the beaten path as well. For example, the tiny town of Dvigrad, which is essentially a medieval ghost town offering a unique tour of history. Then there's the Nesactium, an ancient hill fort settlement that was the historic capital of the Histri tribes from which Istria got its name. Isn't that fascinating? If you're keen on delving deeper into Istria's history, you might want to explore the Basilica of St. Mary Formosa in Pula. This 6th-century church, built in the Byzantine era, is partly in ruins but its beauty still shines through. Its intricate mosaic floors are a testament to the region's diverse historical influences.
